Luton \u00e9 uma pequena cidade, nos arredores de Londres, com cerca de 200 000 habitantes e uma comunidade bastante heterog\u00e9nea de imigrantes. H\u00e1 um grave problema de pobreza e iliteracia com quase 30% de pessoas que t\u00eam problemas de escrita e leitura.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
A <\/span>biblioteca p\u00fablica de Luton<\/span><\/a> conta com oito p\u00f3los, uma biblioteca m\u00f3vel e um servi\u00e7o ao domic\u00edio (Home Libary<\/span> <\/span>Service) que<\/span> <\/span>serve, essencialmente, a popula\u00e7\u00e3o idosa e\/ou com limita\u00e7\u00f5es motoras.<\/span> <\/span>A Biblioteca de Luton desenvolve um projecto de coopera\u00e7\u00e3o com outras duas bibliotecas, Bedforshire e Bedford Borough Council, permitindo o empr\u00e9stimo interbibliotecas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
H\u00e1 dois anos,<\/span> <\/span>a Central Library<\/span> <\/span>lan\u00e7ou um projecto inovador, o e-Book<\/em> e o e-Audio<\/em>. Este projecto surgiu na linha de inova\u00e7\u00e3o que a biblioteca tem procurado no sentido de responder a um tipo de popula\u00e7\u00e3o em permanente \u2018tr\u00e2nsito\u2019 entre Luton (onde vivem) e Londres (onde trabalham).<\/span> <\/span><\/span>Do It Online<\/span><\/a> \u00e9 o servi\u00e7o que permite<\/span> <\/span><\/span>leitura on-line<\/em> de peri\u00f3dicos, realiza\u00e7\u00e3o, a distancia, de testes para a carta de condu\u00e7\u00e3o ou o teste<\/span> para a obten\u00e7\u00e3o do estatuto de cidad\u00e3o brit\u00e2nico e, em 2006, lan\u00e7aram<\/span><\/span> <\/span>a Netlibrary que permitiu a disponibiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de audiobooks<\/em> mas que terminou por problemas de direitos de autor.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Em 2008, com a atribui\u00e7\u00e3o de uma consider\u00e1vel verba \u00e0 biblioteca,<\/span> <\/span>a Central Library decidiu lan\u00e7ar o projecto <\/span><\/span>E-Book e E-Audio<\/span><\/a>. Assim,<\/span> <\/span>com a Overdrive (que tinha j\u00e1 uma larga experi\u00eancia nesta \u00e1rea com bibliotecas americanas) desenvolveram toda a plataforma tecnol\u00f3gica que permite aos utentes, atrav\u00e9s de um PIN, descarregarem os e-books<\/em> ou audio-books<\/em> por determinado per\u00edodo, findo o qual o documento \u00e9 \u2018apagado\u2019. Os utentes necessitam, na 1\u00aa vez que acedem, de fazer o download<\/em> do <\/span><\/span><\/span>Adobe Digital Editions para e-books<\/em> e Overdrive Media Console para o audio-book<\/em>. O projecto est\u00e1 a evoluir, n\u00e3o isento, de alguns problemas que Fiona Marriot enumera:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

– Each new Ereader or MP3 player will give us a problem, or an issue. For example, we have just discovered that the Sony Reader can hold EPUB books, or PDF books, but not both at the same time!<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

– It is difficult to get library staff engaged with a \u201cvirtual library\u201d unless they are using it themselves. They may also see it as a threat to their own career.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

– There is a minimum level of books you need to keep customers coming back; it seems to be around the 1,000 book level, but we are closer to 2000 books now.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

– Not everyone can cope with downloading; a small percentage of customers will not be able to do it without support in the library itself. One customer even bought an Apple Mac, without checking with us that it would work with our system \u2013 it doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

– We have bought a laptop with wireless internet access, so that we can demonstrate the website to library staff, customers and non-customers.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

– We started with WMA and PDF formats, and have had to add in MP3 and EPUB formats this year. The popularity of certain formats has changed rapidly in two years.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

– Customers especially like downloading medical and self-help books, anything they might find too embarrassing to ask for in the library itself.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

– Customers will give anything a try and aren\u2019t too concerned about the bestsellers; they just want a good read.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

– There is no \u201caverage\u201d Ebook customer \u2013 they may be older, younger, professional, student, housewife or child \u2013 they are as diverse as all our library customers!<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/div>\n

– In our next phase we will add our own eBook content, encouraging local people to give us their stories, poetry and creative work.<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
